What Is Kelulut Honey?

Kelulut Honey is made by tiny bees which belong to the Trigona species. They are also identified as stingless bees which may sound like they are not dangerous and friendly, but in reality they are not. Stingless bees, sometimes called stingless honey bees or simply meliponines, are a large group of bees, from the Meliponini tribe. They belong in the Apidae family, and are closely related to the common honey bees, carpenter bees, orchid bees, and bumblebees.

The still attack you to protect their colonies and their honey when threatened. But their bite won’t result in a lump or an itch. But since they are stingless they are more annoying than scary when they swarm in your ears, hair and eyes. And most of the time you can feel their sticky legs which cause discomfort on your skin, and makes you feel like running away. But it is not all that bad. I would say if the weather is a bit colder, the bees are a little calmer, you can actually have a nice experience of PURE KELULUT HONEY tasting.

There are two types which is popular in our knowledge, and our source of kelulut comes from these two stingless bees type: Itama and geniotrigona Thoracica.

Watch this video to learn more about Itama.

Stingless bees, sometimes called stingless honey bees or simply meliponines, are a large group of bees, from the Meliponini tribe. They belong in the Apidae family, and are closely related to the common honey bees, carpenter bees, orchid bees, and bumblebees.

Kelulut bees can only be found in countries with tropical and subtropical climates, Southeast Asia being one of them. Kelulut bees have origins in Malaysia and have existed here for thousands of years. The kelulut bees much prefer to make their homes in hollow trunks, underground cavities and wall cavities.

Thus to help these bees, kelulut bee homes are placed around the wild near the jungle where the bees can have access to good source of nutrition. Taste-wise, the honey that they produce is different too. The honey reaped from kelulut bees have a tangy, sweet, and sour taste coupled with an earthy scent. The taste is unique and amazing, thus has been the favourite of many all around Europe.
