Teh Tarik (Pulled Tea)

The origins of teh (tea) and kopi (coffee) tarik can be traced to Indian Muslim immigrants in the Malay Peninsula who set up drink stalls at the entrance of rubber plantations after World War II to serve the workers there.[1] Since colonial times, teh and kopi tarik has been a popular Malaysian Indian cuisine for many in British Malaya and Singapore. Traditionally, teh and kopi tarik has been seen served with the Roti canai which is a popular breakfast set among Malaysians.

An element of showmanship exists in the preparation of teh and kopi tarik. The ability to drag a long stream of tea above the heads of the patrons without giving them a shower is an amusing novelty for the locals and tourists alike. In Malaysia, there are occasions where teh and kopi tarik brewers gather for competitions and performances to show their skills. Teh and Kopi tarik has become recognised along with nasi lemak as part of the food and beverage heritage of Malaysia by the Malaysian government ministry.

What is Teh Tarik?

Teh tarik (literally “pulled tea”) is a popular hot milk tea beverage most commonly prepared in restaurants, outdoor stalls and coffeeshops within Malaysia. Its name is derived from the pouring process of “pulling” the drink during preparation. The higher and longer the pull, the frothier the tea gets. Well, something like making frothy hot lattes. It is made from a strong brew of black tea blended with condensed milk. It is the national drink of Malaysia. Everyone loves this drink as it compliments all the spicy and yummy delectable that Malaysia has to offer.

HANG TUAH  is now bringing this ‘Tarik’ goodness right to your doorstep. The product is called HANG TUAH TEH TARIK (PREMIUM INSTANT MILK TEA) and it gives the same taste and flavour that you get in the Malaysian restaurants.  All that is needed is hot water and the instant premix. Then comes your talent in trying the pull techniques. The higher the pull the frothier the drink. Go on and give this Teh Tarik a try.
